Movember Madness: Driving Male Engagement in Workplace Wellness

Posted by Lisa Stovall on Mon, Oct, 16, 2023

Get ready, because November is just around the corner and it's time to embrace Movember!CST-3125 QF-2-EN

But hold on a minute, this is no typo — it's a worldwide movement that merges mustaches and November, all in the name of putting men's health first.

From the strong dads who raised us, to the ever-supportive brothers and lifelong friends we treasure, men everywhere face health challenges, often shielded behind silent masks. While they might discuss the recent football game or debate the merits of the latest blockbuster, broaching the topic of health? Well, that's ventured into less.

In fact, research from Harvard Health reveals that men in the United States suffer from higher rates of chronic illnesses and have a shorter life expectancy than women. Blame it on societal expectations or workplace stress; men's wellness often takes a backseat.

So, with Movember as a catalyst, how can HR and wellness advocates seize this opportunity to prioritize men's health? Let's jump right in and explore it!

The Story Behind Movember

Before we get into the "how-to," let's understand the "why." The Movember Foundation embarked on a mission to shift paradigms around men's health. While men often face societal pressures to be "stoic" or "unemotional," this fantastic foundation leverages the fun of mustache-growing to foster deep, meaningful conversations about real issues.

What began as a quirky challenge has now blossomed into a global movement, urging men worldwide to sport a mustache throughout November. The aim? Spark conversations and raise funds to address prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health challenges.

Hosting a "MO-MENT" This Movember: Fun Ideas for Engagement

As Movember approaches, it’s time to brainstorm some fantastic ways to engage your teams, especially the men. The month is not just about growing mustaches; it’s about raising awareness for men’s health issues. Hosting a "MO-MENT" can be the perfect engagement activity. Not sure where to start? We've got you covered!

1. Sports Clash Challenge
Rally your colleagues for a backyard football match or a doubles tennis game. It's "pay-to-play", and may the best team win!

2. Gaming Tournament
Gamers, assemble! From Fortnite to FIFA, host a gaming marathon or tournament. Stream it live on platforms like Twitch, creating buzz and engagement.

3. Trivia Night
Who doesn’t love a good trivia challenge? Get an energetic Quiz Master, some cool prizes, and let the fun begin. Spice things up with themed rounds and costumes.

4. Shave Down
Kick-off Movember with a clean slate. On the 1st, gather everyone (virtually or physically) for a Shave Down event. Bring in professional barbers or let colleagues do the honors.

5. All or Nothing Auction
Have items collecting dust? Host an auction! Be it in-person or online, let your colleagues bid on items. If you're feeling brave, auction off your wardrobe (washed, of course)!

6. The Mo Factor (Talent Show)
Got talent in the house? Organize a talent show, letting your colleagues showcase their unique skills. It’s entertaining and a fantastic team-building activity.

7. Mo Photo Contest
A picture speaks a thousand words! Host a mustache-themed photo contest, set up themes, challenges, and have a panel to pick the best shots.

8. Mo Golf Tournament
Tee off for a cause! Organize a golf tournament, selecting a format that fits match play, alternate shot, or our fav, the 4-person scramble. Engage local businesses for sponsorships, and don't forget the raffle for added fun!

9. 5K Stache Dash
On your mark, get set, Mo! Map a 5-mile route, invite colleagues to run or walk, and celebrate with a post-run bash. Ensure you have all the necessities first aid, permits, and enthusiastic volunteers.

10. Stache Bash Party
As Movember comes to a close, celebrate the month with a party. Think of it as a thank-you to all participants. Add wellness activities, games, and ensure you celebrate the month's achievements.

Remember, Movember isn’t just about the mustache. It's about coming together, having fun, and making a meaningful impact. So pick an activity (or several), rally your troops, and let’s make this Movember memorable!

Engaging Men: Beyond the Beard and 'Stache

Stereotypes and stigmas persist. Phrases like "man up" or misguided notions that men shouldn't discuss vulnerabilities are barriers to wellness. Additionally, generic wellness programs may not resonate with everyone. It's essential to acknowledge these barriers to create effective solutions to connect with men. Here are a few clever ideas to get the guys at your company involved:

Open the Floor for Conversation: Arrange weekly sessions where employees can freely discuss their health challenges, aspirations, and even share personal stories. Remember, the aim is to make everyone feel safe and heard.

Host Awareness Workshops: Invite healthcare professionals to discuss prostate and testicular cancer, their symptoms, preventive measures, and the importance of regular check-ups.

Promote Mental Health: Organize mindfulness workshops, meditation sessions, and one-on-one counseling. Let's break the taboo surrounding men and mental health.

Foster a Supportive Environment: Encourage employees to form support groups, be it for those battling health issues or simply for men to discuss their daily challenges. A little camaraderie goes a long way!

Set Up a Biometric Screening: One of the most important things men can do to stay healthy is to know and track key health numbers. Tracking these and keeping them in the healthy range will lower risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and many types of cancer.

Elevating Men’s Wellness

Movember is more than just a month of mustaches. It's a golden opportunity for us — to play our part in changing narratives and shattering stereotypes. By addressing men's health issues proactively, you're promoting a healthy workforce and fostering loyalty and trust. Men should feel that their workplace understands and supports their unique health needs.

An inclusive wellness strategy isn’t just a November thing — it’s a year-round commitment. This Movember, let's shift our focus to the men in our organizations, ensuring they are seen, heard, and most importantly, healthy.

Challenge time! We urge companies to kick off a male-focused health initiative this month. Share your stories, successes, and lessons below.
