The Glove Policy for TotalWellness Contractors

Posted by Becky Squiers on Wed, Aug, 10, 2016

Gloves at Wellness EventsSome wellness event stations require wellness professionals to wear gloves for sanitary and safety purposes. At TotalWellness, those include events like:

  • Fingerstick blood tests
  • Venipuncture blood draws
  • Flu shot administration

The gloves you need for each of these procedures will be sent with the supplies the primary contractor will be bringing to the event. TotalWellness will supply medium-sized gloves. If you need a size other than medium, you’ll have to bring your own.We require that when doing a fingerstick, blood draw or flu shot, all contractors wear two gloves—one on each hand.

Changing Gloves

You’ll need to change your gloves between each participant you see. In accordance with expert recommendations, each new participant should get a new, clean pair of gloves. You cannot re-use gloves, even if they don’t appear contaminated.

You can use the provided hand sanitizer in between glove changes. But you must wear gloves, and they must be changed between participants.

Disposal of Gloves

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines something as hazardous when it’s been contaminated with a drop of blood the size of a quarter or larger. If the gloves you’re using become contaminated with a drop of blood the size of a quarter or larger, please dispose of them in the hazardous waste disposal containers that were sent to your event.

If your gloves have not been contaminated with that amount of blood, they can be disposed of in the regular trash bin. It’s important to remember OSHA’s guidelines, or you might run out of room in the hazardous waste bin.

Adhering to the TotalWellness glove policy might seem like a small detail in the bigger picture of the whole event. It’s important to follow this glove policy, though, for a few reasons.

  1. So that all participants feel safe, secure and protected, and that they are working with health professionals who have that safety, security and protection in mind.
  2. So that all TotalWellness events maintain a sense of consistency.
  3. So that you utilize the appropriate amount of supplies and do not run into any surprises from an event supply standpoint.

So again, as a TotalWellness contractor, please wear two gloves—one on each hand—when administering a fingerstick, blood draw or flu shot. Please change your gloves between each participant and dispose of them appropriately.
