The Flu Shot Dosage You’ll Use at Wellness Events

Posted by Becky Squiers on Wed, Sep, 07, 2016

When administering any vaccine, the dosage you use matters. That statement holds true when administering flu shots at corporate wellness events.

That’s because all vaccines—the flu shot included—are made with the dosage in mind. They’re manufactured to be administered in a particular dose.

If you don’t administer enough flu vaccine—if the dosage is too small—that flu shot probably won’t be effective. Someone who receives too small a dose will likely still get sick if exposed to the flu.

If you administer too much flu vaccine—if the dosage is too large—you’ll likely run out of supplies. We mail enough supplies for the projected event participation, so if participants receive double the dose, you won’t have enough vaccine.

The Correct Dosage

Experts have identified the correct dosage for adult flu shot recipients as 0.5 mL (or ½ mL). Depending on the types of syringes you’re used to, the reading might be in decimals or fractions. Both amounts are exactly the same.

At TotalWellness events, we do not vaccinate children. We only vaccinate adults. So this dosage is the only dosage you should ever administer at a TotalWellness event.

Remember, all vaccines you administer for TotalWellness will be a 0.5 mL (or ½ mL) dose of flu vaccine. Please draw up your vaccine accordingly, and per our “Transparency” guidelines, verbalize that step to the participant.
