The Joy of Intuitive Eating — Unlock a New Approach to Healthy Living

Written by Lisa Stovall | Wed, Dec 27, 2023

As the New Year approaches, many of us embark on a journey to improve our overall well-being, and more often than not, nutrition and healthy eating dominate our resolutions. It's a cycle as familiar as the changing seasons a burst of enthusiasm for strict meal plans and calorie counting, only to be followed by frustration and a return to our old habits.

But why not take a detour from the usual route this year? Instead of falling for the diet industry's seductive promises, let's explore a path that embraces a more compassionate, realistic, and enjoyable way of relating to food and our bodies.

Amidst the sea of diet plans and weight loss trends, there is a refreshing approach that stands out Intuitive Eating. Unlike restrictive diets, intuitive eating focuses on listening to your body and honoring its needs. Let's explore this mindful approach to healthy eating that brings peace and balance into our lives.

The Basics of Intuitive Eating

Intuitive Eating is a compassionate and nurturing approach to eating that prioritizes self-care and respects the unique needs of all individuals. This empowering framework was first developed by Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole in 1995, and it continues to revolutionize our relationship with food and our bodies.

Essentially, it’s the opposite of a traditional diet. It doesn’t impose guidelines about what to avoid and what or when to eat. There is no pass or fail. Therefore, there is no "blowing it"; instead, it's a journey of self-discovery and connection to the needs of your mind and body. There is nothing to count: this includes no counting of calories, carbs, points, or macros.

Intuitive Eating involves a dynamic connection between our mind and body. Its principles focus on nurturing body awareness and removing any obstacles that may hinder this process, also known as interoceptive awareness. In essence, Intuitive Eating is a personal journey of prioritizing our health by actively listening to and responding to the direct signals our body sends us, in order to meet our physical and psychological needs.

10 Intuitive Eating Principles

Intuitive Eating goes beyond being a set of guidelines; it represents a profound shift in how we view food and our bodies. By challenging the influence of diet culture that has overshadowed our relationship with food for so long, we can truly listen to our body's natural cues instead of relying on external rules and restrictions. It's a transformative journey towards a more peaceful and fulfilling way of eating, where food becomes a source of joy rather than anxiety. To truly tap into the potential of Intuitive Eating, it's essential to embrace all ten principles — not just cherry-pick a couple to half-heartedly follow..

Here's your guide to embracing the ten fundamental guidelines of Intuitive Eating, transforming how you perceive food and nourishment.

1. Reject the Diet Mentality: Intuitive Eating starts with a rebellious act: ditching the diet dogma. It's about time we got angry at the diet culture fairy tales and the yo-yo dieting rollercoaster they put us on. To opt out of diet culture, it's essential to recognize it.

Action Step:
Make a mental note to give diet culture the side-eye whenever you encounter it. Whether it's in conversations with friends, co-workers, or family, on podcasts, social media, TV shows, movies, or at the gym, be ready to spot it and shut it down.

2. Honor Your Hunger: Our bodies are smarter than we give them credit for. Honoring hunger is like keeping your car fueled; ignore it, and you might find yourself on an unintended detour through binge-town.

Action Step: Feed yourself with a variety of foods that truly satisfy.  Learn to recognize early signs of hunger and respond by eating, thus avoiding excessive hunger that can lead to overeating.

3. Make Peace with Food: Wave the white flag and end the food war. When you stop viewing chocolate cake as a villain ad, you take the power away from the binge-eating monster under your bed.

Action Step: Give yourself unconditional permission to eat. When you tell yourself that you can’t or shouldn’t have a particular food, it can lead to intense feelings of deprivation and, ultimately, uncontrollable cravings.

4. Challenge the Food Police: Those nagging thoughts that patrol your food choices? Time to give them the boot. Eating a cookie doesn't make you a criminal, just human.

Action Step: Banish the notion of "good" and "bad" foods. Give yourself permission to enjoy all foods in moderation, cultivating a positive relationship with food.

5. Discover the Satisfaction Factor: Eating should be a pleasure, not a math problem. The Japanese have it right food is one of life's great joys. When was the last time you truly savored your meal without the guilt?

Action Step: Make your eating experience enjoyable. Sit down to eat, serve your food on a nice plate, and create an inviting eating environment. This helps you feel satisfied and content.

6. Feel Your Fullness: Imagine your stomach is having a polite conversation with your brain. It's not about silencing the chat with a "shush," but rather tuning in to when it says, "Thanks, I’m good now."

Action Step: Pause in the middle of eating and ask yourself how the food tastes, and your current hunger level. Learning to recognize when you’re comfortably full is a key step in Intuitive Eating.

7. Cope with Your Emotions with Kindness: Food is often a Band-Aid for our emotions. Acknowledge your feelings, but don't let them drive you to the fridge.

Action Step: Find ways to comfort, nurture, distract, and resolve your issues without using food. Anxiety, loneliness, boredom, and anger are emotions we all experience, but food won’t fix any of these feelings.

8. Respect Your Body: It’s time to unsubscribe from the unrealistic body standards newsletter. Respect and love your body like a cherished friend, not a project to be fixed.

Action Step: Accept your genetic blueprint. Just as a person with a shoe size of eight would not expect to squeeze into a size six, it’s futile to have a similar expectation about body size.

9. Movement — Feel the Difference: Exercise should be like a spontaneous dance party, not a military drill. It's about feeling good, not just burning calories.

Action Step
:
Shift your focus to how it feels to move your body, rather than the calorie-burning effect of exercise. Focusing on how you feel from working out can make the difference between rolling out of bed for a brisk morning walk or hitting the snooze alarm.

10. Honor Your Health — Gentle Nutrition: Eating healthy isn’t about perfection; it’s about balance and enjoyment. One indulgent meal won't derail your health, just like one salad won't make you a health guru.

Action Step: Make food choices that honor your health and taste buds while making you feel well. Remember that you don’t have to eat perfectly to be healthy. Consistency will go a long way.
