Choosing the Right Health Screening

Posted by Lisa Stovall on Fri, Jun, 08, 2012

In order to get the most benefit out of an on-site health screening, it is important to pick theChoices type of health screening that will work best for your employees and provide the right data for your wellness program. When looking at a biometric screening program, companies can choose between a fingerstick or venous blood draw. For most companies, the fingerstick method is the preferred method.

Advantages of Fingerstick

  1. Results are available to the employee at the health screening.
  2. With immediate results, employees can be counseled at the health screening. We call this a “Teachable Moment” and our highly trained health professionals clearly explain what each value means to the participant.
  3. High-risk employees are identified immediately at the health screening and referred for follow-up.
  4. Higher employee participation rates because a fingerstick is often considered to be less invasive and traumatic than a venous blood draw.

Advantages of Venous Blood Draw

  1. Venous blood draw allows for the collection of a larger volume of blood so more tests can be conducted. Some of the more popular tests include: Cotinine (Nicotine), Cancer Antigen 125, Complete Blood Count, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone.
  2. Employees may perceive that tests completed in a laboratory are more accurate, so they are less likely to question the results.
